METI Minister Miyazawa Visited the United Arab Emirates (UAE)

From January 16 (Fri.) to 19 (Mon.), 2015, Mr. Yoichi Miyazawa, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, visited the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to attend the Fifth Session of the Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). Taking this opportunity, Minister Miyazawa also had meetings with dignitaries, including H.H. Sheikh Hamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chief of Abu Dhabi Crown Prince’s Court and a member of the royal family, H.E. Mr. Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy, and H.E. Mr. Abdulla Nasser Al Suwaidi, Director General of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), as well as other important officials from Malaysia and Kazakhstan.

1. Fifth Assembly of IRENA

Minister Miyazawa chaired the Fifth Session of the Assembly of IRENA and led the proceedings of the session, including the reassignment of H.E. Mr. Adnan Z. Amin, Director-General of IRENA.

Throughout the session, Japan demonstrated its intention to contribute to other countries in the field of renewable energy, an area where it has developed cutting-edge technology.

 

2. Bilateral meetings

Meetings with dignitaries of the UAE

At the meetings with dignitaries from the UAE, who are key players for Japan's energy security policy, both sides agreed to develop cooperation in a broader range of fields and not limited to the energy field.

  1. At the meeting with H.H. Sheikh Hamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chief of Abu Dhabi Crown Prince’s Court and a member of the royal family, both sides exchanged views on the impact of the decline in the price of crude oil on the Japanese and global economies. At the same time, Minister Miyazawa encouraged the UAE to renew the oil concessions by Japanese companies. In addition, he introduced the ongoing achievements derived from Japanese company investments in Abu Dhabi, and both sides affirmed the significance of their cooperation in broader fields, including industry and finance.
  2. At the meeting with H.E. Mr. Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy, both sides agreed to further promote cooperation in a broader range of areas including investment, education, and medical services, while maintaining the current focus on energy including oil and nuclear power.
  3. Minister Miyazawa had a brief meeting with H.E. Mr. Abdulla Nasser Al Suwaidi, Director General of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), and encouraged the company to renew oil concessions by Japanese companies. At the meeting with H.E. Mr. Mohamed Butti Al-Qubaisi, Acting Director General of ADNOC, Minister Miyazawa again encouraged the company to renew such concessions by Japanese companies, and at the same time, both sides witnessed a signing ceremony to conclude a memorandum for the enhancement of the cooperative relationship between Japan and the UAE in the fields of education and medical services.

  1. At the meeting with H.E. Mr. Shkolnik Vladimir Sergeevich, Minister of Energy, Kazakhstan, Minister Miyazawa exchanged views on cooperation in the field of energy, including oil and nuclear energy.
  2. At the meeting with H.E. Dr. Maximus Johnity Ongkili, Minister of Energy, Green Technology, and Water, Malaysia, both sides exchanged views on enhanced cooperation in the field of water, as well as the field of energy, including oil and LNG.
  3. zAt the bilateral meeting with H.E. Mr. Adnan Z. Amin, Director-General of IRENA, both sides agreed to enhance the cooperative relationship between Japan and IRENA.
