Recall of Imported Humidifiers Sold by Yamazen Corporation (Collection of Products and Refund)

Serious product accidents occurred involving humidifiers imported by Musee Corporation and sold by Yamazen Corporation, causing the products to ignite and to burn their surroundings.

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) received a report on the incidents and announced them as serious product accidents in accordance under Article 35 (1) of the Consumer Product Safety Act, which relates to accidents of unclear origin in a product other than gas or oil appliances.

To prevent further accidents, Yamazen Corporation announced an alert to consumers about the use of the products in question on its website, and the company has been discussing measures concerning the accidents. In addition to the notice, on January 21, 2015, it also announced on its website that it will recall the products in question and issue refunds.

METI would like to alert consumers who have purchased the products in question to make use of the recall (refund) service offered by the company in order to prevent any further accidents.

1. Nature of the accident and recurrence-prevention measures

1) Nature of the accident

Two serious product accidents involving humidifiers imported by Musee Corporation and sold by Yamazen Corporation occurred, causing the products to ignite and to burn their surroundings. The accidents were reported to METI in accordance with Article 35 (1) of the Consumer Products Safety Act (Control Nos. A201100893 and A201300581).

The cause of the accidents is under investigation, but it is thought that use of an evaporation dish in the products in question with a water stain remaining on the dish led the components to overheat, causing the products to ignite.

One of these serious product accidents, which occurred on January 17, 2012 (Control No. A201100893), is considered to have been caused by a water stain between the case of the body and an evaporation dish, cracking the case and causing the water to enter the components of the body, which caused the product to ignite. The investigation of this accident has already finished and the results have been publicized.

No injuries occurred in either of the two accidents.
