Agency for Natural Resources and EnergyInformation on a Puddle of Highly Contaminated Water Detected at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station and the Impact of the Water on the Ocean

On February 24, 2015, Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) announced that it had detected a puddle of highly contaminated water accumulating on the rooftop of the large carry-in entrance of the Unit 2 Reactor Building of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (NPS).

At the Fukushima Daiichi NPS, the company has been cleaning and decontaminating the drainage channels at the site to meet the target level of radioactivity for the boundary of the site, which is required by the Nuclear Regulation Authority. While conducting these efforts, it discovered that the concentration of radioactive materials at Drainage K has not decreased sufficiently, and decided to examine certain sections in those high radiation areas from which contaminated water may flow into Drainage K, resulting in the discovery of the puddle of contaminated water on the rooftop.

The Agency for Natural Resources and Energy will instruct TEPCO to take all appropriate measures to curb the outflow of radioactive materials through such drainage channels to the outside of the site.

As with previous announcements, the radioactivity in the seawater outside the port of Fukushima Daiichi NPS continues to be much lower than that stipulated by the laws and regulations and the public notices.
