Japan to Invite IAEA Experts for a Supplementary Consultation to the IAEA Review of Plans for the Decommissioning of TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station Units 1 to 4

The Agency for Natural Resources and Energy (ANRE) hereby announces that Japan requested the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to dispatch IAEA experts to Japan as a supplementary consultation to the February 9 to 17, 2015 IAEA review of plans for the decommissioning of TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station Units 1 to 4.

Outline

The Government of Japan has been making efforts for the decommissioning of TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station according to the Mid-and-Long-Term Roadmap towards the Decommissioning of TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station Units 1-4. From February 9 to 17, 2015, the Government hosted an IAEA review mission and following the review, on February 17, 2015, Mr. Yosuke Takagi, State Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, received a preliminary summary report from the mission.

IAEA is now compiling a final report on the review. However, the Government considers that additional explanations should be provided to IAEA on methods that Japan employs in dealing with contaminated rainwater in addition to highly-contaminated water at the site and how it will improve the approaches to information disclosure. For this purpose, the Government requested that IAEA dispatch its experts to Japan. The experts will visit Japan from April 17 to 21, 2015, and receive explanations of Japan’s efforts from ANRE officials and TEPCO staff, while also touring the site of Fukushima Daiichi NPS.

IAEA will also publicize a press release on the dispatch on the same day.*
