Japan Patent OfficeJPO Status Report 2015 Released

The Japan Patent Office (JPO) hereby announces the release of the JPO Status Report 2015.

The report is the JPO’s first status report compiled this year and aims to quickly convey the JPO’s statistical information and results of its policies in 2014 to the public. It provides descriptions in Japanese and English together so as to serve as a tool in conveying information to other countries.

1. Outline of the report

The report contains the JPO’s major statistical information and results of its policies in 2014. To quickly publicize such information inside and outside Japan, the JPO compiled the report at the end of March 2015, ahead of publicizing the JPO Annual Report in about May or June every year. The report provides descriptions in Japanese and English together so as to serve as a tool in conveying information not only within Japan but also to other countries.

2. Key points of the report

The number of patent applications filed with the JPO in 2014 was 325,989, showing a tendency of a gradual decrease since 2006. However, looking at the number of patent applications and granted patents by application filing year, the number of patent applications reached a peak in 2000, while that of granted patents has shown an increasing trend since around 2000 from the mid- to long-term viewpoint. This fact shows that enterprises have been more strict in selecting patentable technologies before they file applications.

The number of patent applications filed from Japanese enterprises in other countries continues to remain high. In 2013, the number of such applications marked 201,410, about a 1.4-fold increase compared with a decade ago. The figures imply the enhanced need for enterprises to protect domestic technologies in many countries as an increasing number of Japanese enterprises are developing their business overseas.

Moreover, in 2014, the number of applications for design registration filed with the JPO was 29,738, while that of applications for trademark registration was 124,442.
