Fourth Meeting of Japan-China Joint IP Working Group

The fourth meeting of the Japan-China joint IP Working Group (IP WG) was held in Beijing on May 11, 2015, in accordance with the “Memorandum of Understanding on Exchanges and Cooperation for the Protection of Intellectual Property (IP) Rights” signed in June 2009 between the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan and the Minister of Commerce of China.
This fourth meeting was held after the third meeting of the IP WG in Kobe in October 2011.

The fourth meeting of the IP WG was co-chaired by Mr. Makoto Ogawa, Deputy Director-General of the Manufacturing Industries Bureau, Ministry and Economy, Trade and Industry, and Mr. Chen Fuli, Deputy Director of the Department of Treaty and Law, Ministry of Commerce. A wide range of Japanese and Chinese government agencies attended the meeting and actively exchanged opinions regarding various issues relating to intellectual property protection, based on the situation where issues relating to intellectual property protection have become increasingly complex, decentralized, sophisticated in recent years, as illustrated by the distribution of counterfeit and pirated products on the internet.

Specifically, they discussed the trends in intellectual property-related legislation since the third meeting as well as future intellectual property protection strategies in Japan and China, and opinions were exchanged between parties on the enhancement of the cooperation of both countries as to the measures for the intellectual property protection on the internet and the approaches to further enhance the environment for strengthening enforcement.
It was agreed that the fifth meeting of the IP WG will be held in Japan in 2016.

By continuing to hold meetings of the IP WG, it is expected that Japan and China will deepen their cooperation and mutual understanding regarding the intellectual property protection in both countries, and consequently, will further develop a mutually beneficial environment for intellectual property in both countries.
