New Minister’s Award under the Award for Academic Startups to be Established

In FY 2014, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI)conducted a survey to analyze the impact of the support for university-launched startups in relation to their growth provided by venture capital (hereby referred to as VC), etc. Based on the survey, in order to disseminate policy measures that contribute to the growth of the university-launched startups, the METI Minister's Award and the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) Chairman’s Award were recently established under the Award for Academic Startups, which was established in FY 2014 as an award program for the Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) Minister's Awards and for the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) President’s Award. It was decided that these awards should be a joint award program by both ministries.

1. Background

The enforcement of the Industrial Competitiveness Enhancement Act allowed national universities to invest in VC in 2014, and consequently the policy measures for the growth of the university-launched startups have been enhanced. In order to further accelerate their growth, METI conducted the survey to highlight measures which had a positive impact and compiled the survey report on April 10, 2015.

2. Establishment of METI Minister’s Award and NEDO Chairman’s Award

In order to disseminate such policy measures contributing to the growth of the university-launched startups, the new METI Minister's Award and NEDO Chairman’s Award were established under the Award for Academic Startups established in FY 2014 as an award program for the MEXT Minister's Award and JST President’s Award. Thus, the Award for Academic Startups became the joint award program for both ministries and includes these new awards.

With regard to the METI Minister's Award and NEDO Chair’s Award, the review of candidates shall focus on the university-launched startups that attained growth by solving issues considered difficult to achieve by themselves, but that were likely to succeed with the practical use of the support of VC, for example, issues such as “exploring potential overseas customers,” and “improving adaptive product development by exploring technology related to a company’s products.” It is expected that these awards will promote activate appropriate support for university-launched startups and thereby facilitate the growth of university-launched startups.
The selection procedures of the award winners will be conducted in cooperation with MEXT and JST as they have done since 2014. A commendation ceremony is scheduled to be held at Innovation Japan 2015.

Application period: from Friday, May 15 to Thursday, June 25, 2015
Commendation ceremony: Thursday August 27, 2015, held at Innovation Japan 2015
