Joint Press Release with the Consumer Affairs AgencyRecall of Bathroom Heating/Ventilating/Drying Units Manufactured by MAX Co., Ltd. (Replacement of components at no cost)

A fire occurred in conjunction with a Bathroom Heating/Ventilating/Drying Unit manufactured by MAX Co., Ltd., and marketed by TOSTEM Corporation (LIXIL Corporation at present).

On December 24, 2014, an accident that had been reported as a serious product accident (A201400592) pursuant to the provisions set forth in Article 35 (1) of the Consumer Product Safety Act was publicized as an accident suspected to have been caused by the product.

On June 3, 2015, MAX Co., Ltd. and LIXIL Corporation announced on their websites that the components of the target products, including the entire drying units themselves, can be replaced at no cost in order to prevent the recurrence of such an accident.

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) hereby informs people who possess the product to have the manufacturer replace the components at no cost in order to prevent a recurrence of such an accident.

1. Nature of the accidents and recurrence-prevention measures

(1) Nature of the accidents

Regarding Bathroom Heating/Ventilating/Drying Units that MAX Co., Ltd. manufactured, serious product accidents have occurred and resulted in burning of said products. Three serious product accidents have been reported on the basis of the provisions set forth in Article 35 (1) of the Consumer Product Safety Act (Control numbers: A201200782, A201400592, A201400829).

The cause of the accidents is currently under investigation. It is presumed that humidity in a thermal fuse acting as the safety device for the heating element increased because the resin sealant in the thermal fuse had deteriorated due to long-term use in a high-humidity environment, and the fuse element inside the thermal fuse partially dissolved in the water, which caused imperfect contact with the fuse element, raising the temperature at the imperfect contact, causing an ignition of resin components close to the fuse element, after which the fire spread.

Note that the investigation of the serious product accident that occurred on January 6, 2013 (Control number: A201200782) concluded that abnormal heat generation in a thermal fuse due to an unknown cause melted nearby resins, and then ignited dust and the like, causing a fire. The result of the investigation has already been released.

(2) Recurrence prevention measures

On June 3, 2015, MAX Co., Ltd. and LIXIL Corporation announced on their websites that the components of the target products, including the entire drying units themselves, can be replaced at no cost in order to prevent the recurrence of such an accident.
