Joint Release with the Ministry of the EnvironmentRecall of Folding Tables Imported and Sold by Nissen Co., Ltd. (Recall of the Products and Refund)

There was an accident in which a user’s fingers were injured by a metal fitting on a folding table imported and sold by Nissen Co., Ltd., when the user was holding up the tabletop with his/her hands to stop it from falling during an attempt to move the product.

On September 17, 2014, the accident, which had been reported as “a serious product accident” pursuant to the provisions set forth in Article 35 (1) of the Consumer Product Safety Act, was publicized as “an accident which related to a product other than a gas or oil appliance but for which it could not be determined whether or not the product was the cause of the accident”. Thereafter, on June 19, 2015, the accident was publicized again as an accident of unclear origin involving a product other than a gas or oil appliance based on the results of the investigation.

Concerning the cause of the accident, it is presumed that the height of the concerned product was positioned in a state where a height-adjusting gear and a leg-adjusting bar fit together only by the force of its own weight, and because there was no mechanism to hold them in this state, the leg-adjusting bar released from the height-adjusting gear and dropped to the lowest setting for the gear while the tabletop was falling. However, there is a possibility that upward force was applied to the tabletop when the user moved it, which is also considered to have potentially influenced the accident.

To prevent further accidents, Nissen Co., Ltd. will collect the products subject to the recall and provide refunds from June 23, 2015.

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) encourage consumers who have purchased the product subject to the recall to make use of the recall and refund services in order to prevent any further accidents.

Concerning the cause of the accident, it is presumed that the height of the concerned product is positioned in a state where a height-adjusting gear and a leg-adjusting bar fit together only by the force of its own weight, and because there was no mechanism to hold them in this state, the leg-adjusting bar released from the height-adjusting gear and dropped to the lowest setting for the gear while the tabletop was falling.
