Press Release with the Consumer Affairs AgencyRecall of Batteries for Electric Assist Bicycles Sold by Panasonic Cycle Technology Co., Ltd. (Product Replacement)

Serious product accidents occurred involving batteries for electric assist bicycles sold by Panasonic Cycle Technology Co., Ltd., causing the products to ignite and to burn their surroundings.

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) received reports of the incidents and announced them as serious product accidents on June 2, 2015, in accordance with Article 35 (1) of the Consumer Product Safety Act, which relates to accidents of unclear origin in products.

To prevent further accidents, on July 27, 2015, the company announced on its website a request that the owners of the relevant electric assist bicycles remove the batteries without charging them and keep them in places where there are no combustibles in the vicinity, and that the company will replace the products in question free of charge.

METI would like to alert consumers who have purchased the products in question so that they may make use of the replacement service offered by the company in order to prevent any further accidents.

1. Nature of the accident and recurrence-prevention measures

1) Nature of the accident

Two serious product accidents involving batteries for electric assist bicycles sold by Panasonic Cycle Technology Co., Ltd. occurred, causing the products to ignite and to burn their surroundings. The accidents were reported to METI in accordance with Article 35 (1) of the Consumer Products Safety Act (Control Nos. A201500101 and A201500142, which were announced as accidents "involving electric assist bicycles").

The cause of the accidents is under investigation, but it is thought that a manufacturing defect in the batteries caused the battery cells to overheat, igniting the products in question.
No injuries have occurred as a result of the two accidents.

2) Recurrence-prevention measures

To prevent further accidents, the company announced on its website on July 27, 2015 and will announce in newspapers on July 28, 2015 that it will replace the batteries in question free of charge.

Of the batteries that came with some electric motor-assisted bicycles and batteries sold for replacement since 2005 by Panasonic Cycle Technology Co., Ltd., those that were manufactured by the company from December 2012 to April 2013.

Number of models: 5
Quantity: 60,068 batteries

Anyone who has purchased any of the above products should remove the battery from the bicycle, keep it in a place where there are no combustibles in the vicinity, and immediately contact the company as below.
Please do not charge the battery while you are storing it.
