Agency for Natural Resources and EnergyThe Electricity Supply-Demand Outlook for the Summer of FY 2015 was Reviewed and Revised

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has conducted necessary reviews of the electricity supply-demand outlook for the summer (September) of FY 2015 in light of the start of constant rated thermal power output operations at Kyushu Electric Power Company Co., Inc.’s Sendai Nuclear Power Station Unit 1 following the restart of the unit.

1. Background

Following the startup of Sendai Nuclear Power Station Unit 1 on August 11, 2015, Kyushu Electric Power Co., Inc. started constant rated thermal power output operations on August 31, 2015. As the electricity supply capacity of Kyushu Electric Power Co., Inc. had increased due to the restart of operations, the electricity supply-demand outlook for the summer (September) of FY 2015 was reviewed.

2. Key points of the review

METI has reviewed the electricity supply-demand outlook for the summer (September) of FY 2015 as described in the attachment.

3. The electricity supply-demand outlook for the summer of 2015

According to the estimate of electricity supply and demand for the summer of 2015 conducted in April 2015, the reserve margin in the service area of Kyushu Electric Power Co., Inc. for September 2015 was expected to decrease to minus 1.5% necessitating power interchange with other utilities, even when taking contributions from introducing renewable energy such as solar power into consideration. However, due to the restart of the Sendai Nuclear power station, the company will be responsible for increasing the reserve margin to 6.7% eliminating the need to rely on power interchanges with other utilities. This power supply capacity has been secured by taking measures such as operating thermal power stations at full capacity and deferring regular inspections of plants. Although this restart of the power station will strengthen our ability to respond to emergencies such as unexpected accidents and other incidents, we would like to ask you for your continued understanding and cooperation in electricity conservation and energy saving.
