Announcement of the Preliminary Results of the 2014 Census of Manufacturers

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) implemented the Census of Manufacturers as of December 31, 2014.
The total value of the shipments of manufactured products has increased for three consecutive years, and the amount of added value has increased for two consecutive years.
With regard to the total value of the shipments of manufactured products in the areas devastated by the Great East Japan Earthquake, the value in Iwate Prefecture has exceeded the value set in 2010 (before the earthquake) for three consecutive years, and the value in Miyagi Prefecture has exceeded it for two consecutive years. Although the value in Fukushima Prefecture did not reach the value set in 2010, it has increased for three consecutive years.

1. Subject of the Census

METI has investigated the number of employees and the total value of the shipments of manufactured products, targeting offices (215 thousand offices) that both belong to Japan’s manufacturing industry (the Japan Standard Industrial Classification Division E, excluding head offices etc. that have not conducted manufacturing) and have more than four employees.

2. Outline of the Census results (offices that have 10 employees or more)

1) Overall condition

The number of offices that have 10 employees or more in 2014 was 118,491, down by 1.7% from the previous year and declining for two consecutive years; the number of employees was 6,839,201, down by 0.4% from the previous year and declining for the first time in three years.

The total value of the shipments of manufactured products was 296.6015 trillion yen, up by 4.0% from the previous year and increasing for three consecutive years; the amount of added value was 88.5708 trillion yen, up by 1.8% from the previous year and increasing for two consecutive years.

2) Conditions by industry

With regard to each industry, the number of offices decreased in 21 out of 24 industries, including areas such as the manufacture of food (down by 2.1% from the previous year) and the textile industry (down by 4.6% from the previous year). The number of employees decreased in 13 industries, such as in the manufacture of general-purpose machinery, equipment and supplies (down by 4.0% from the previous year) and the textile industry (down by 3.9% from the previous year).

The total value of the shipments of manufactured products increased in 21 industries, such as in the manufacture of transportation equipment (up by 3.0% from the previous year) and the manufacture of electrical machinery, equipment and supplies (up by 9.5% from the previous year), while it decreased in 3 industries, such as in the manufacture of general-purpose machinery, equipment and supplies (down by 4.0% from the previous year) and in printing and allied industries (down by 0.4% from the previous year).

The amount of added value increased in 14 industries, such as the manufacture of electrical machinery, equipment and supplies (up by 10.8% from the previous year) and the manufacture of transportation equipment (up by 3.0% from the previous year), while it decreased in 10 industries, such as the manufacture of petroleum and coal products (down by 63.4% from the previous year) and the chemical industry (down by 3.1% from the previous year).
