Today, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) approved “a business plan for the use of specific research results” submitted by the Kyoto University Innovation Investment Limited Partnership with Kyoto University Innovation Capital Co., Ltd as its unlimited liability partner based on the Industrial Competitiveness Enhancement Act.

1. Background on Financing for Investment Limited Partnerships by Educational Institutions Such as National Universities

  1. If an Investment Limited Partnership operates a business offering advice to management and supplying funds (support program for utilizing specified research results) to venture capital firms established by universities which apply the technological research results obtained from institutions such as national university corporations in their businesses, the Investment Limited Partnership can submit a plan for such business to the Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) Minister and METI Minister, and then may receive a certification that proves that the said plan is appropriate. For further details, please refer to the attachment.
  2. Authorized support entities for utilizing specified research results will be able to receive investment as well as human and technical expertise and advice from national universities. (*Please note: each investment from institutions such as national university corporations requires authorization by the MEXT Minister.)

2. The current Authorization

METI has examined “a business plan for the use of specific research results” submitted by the Kyoto University Innovation Investment Limited Partnership with Kyoto University Innovation Capital Co., Ltd as its unlimited liability partner and approved the business plan.

METI has examined the structure as well as the appropriateness of the remuneration and compensation structure of officers and employees based on hearing from external experts.

This approval will allow Kyoto University Innovation Investment Limited Partnership which has become an approved operator for the use of specific research results to translate their research results into practical applications in the future.
