Release of Companies Selected for the “Competitive IT Strategy SME Selection 100”

In FY 2014, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) newly began the “Competitive IT Strategy SME Selection 100,” which focuses on the utilization of IT in competitive fields, and is to select 100 companies in total within the next three years. For its first selection at this time, METI has selected 33 SMEs which are proactively making efforts for the effective utilization of IT and which are achieving positive outcomes and hereby releases the results.

1. Outline of the “Competitive IT Strategy SME Selection 100”

Due to recent advances, IT is expected to play and increasing role to the benefit of companies in the near future and Japanese companies need to make significant changes in the way they view IT technology. Specifically, when Japanese companies invest in IT, they focus on taking “defensive” measures, primarily for the improvement of efficiency in tasks and cost cutting. On the contrary, foreign companies are proactively conducting so-called “proactive investments in IT”; utilizing IT in transforming their business models and thereby creating new value by strengthening their competitiveness through improved development of their products and services. In the future, Japanese companies will also need to increase “proactive investments in and utilization of IT.”

In FY 2014, METI began the “Competitive IT Strategy SME Selection 100” which selects SMEs that are proactively making efforts for the effective utilization of IT in competitive fields and that are achieving positive outcomes.
On October 27, 2015 for its first selection, METI selected 33 SMEs for the “Competitive IT Strategy SME Selection 100” and honored them.
