Survey of Factory Location Trends in the First Half of FY 2015 (January-June)(Preliminary Report) Was Complied

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) conducted a Survey of Factory Location Trends, targeting businesses in the manufacturing, gas supply, heating supply, and electricity supply sectors that acquired 1,000 m2 or more of land in the first half of FY 2015 (January through June) for the purpose of constructing factories, and METI hereby announces that it has compiled the results into a report.

Highlights of the results

There were 465 new factory locations acquired by the manufacturing sector across Japan between January and June 2015 (down by 6.6% on a year-on year basis), covering a total area of 522 ha (down by 12.4% on a year-on year basis).
(*) The manufacturing sector includes manufacturers of food and chemical products, in addition to the gas supply and heat supply sectors.

It should be noted that 479 new factory locations were acquired by sectors including the electricity supply sector and the total area of such locations was 571 ha.
(*) In light of the deliberations of the Factory Location Act Investigative Subcommittee in March 2015, this survey excluded solar power plants from the electricity supply sector.

♦ The number ranking for industry-classified new factory locations acquired by the manufacturing sector is as follows.
1) food (73 locations), 2) metal products (65 locations), 3) transportation machinery (44 locations), and 4) production machinery (43 locations)

In addition, the numbers for 12 types of businesses such as textile products (4→12), plastic products (20→27), transportation machinery (38→44), and production machinery (38→43) increased on a year-on-year basis.

There were 92 new factory locations in the seven prefectures affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake (Aomori, Iwate, Miyagi, Fukushima, Ibaraki, Tochigi, and Chiba) (down by 20.0% on a year-on-year basis from 115), and the total area of factory locations in these seven prefectures was 112 ha (down by 27.3% on a year-on-year basis from 154 ha).
