Joint Press Release with the Ministry of Internal Affairs and CommunicationsBasic Survey on the Information and Communications Industry (Preliminary Report)

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) compiled the sixth survey results (preliminary report) of the Basic Survey on the Information and Communications Industry, a joint survey program to comprehensively evaluate the overall status of Japan’s information and communications industry.

1. Summarized results

(1) Profile of companies engaged in the information and communications business

  1. 5,400 companies were engaged (primarily or otherwise) in the information and communications business (*1). Sales from the information and communications business in FY 2014 amounted to 44,565.1 billion yen (total sales of all those companies, including sales in areas other than the information and communications business, equaled 70,729.6 billion yen).

    Concerning the sales related to the information and communications business, the telecommunications business reported the highest sales, followed by computer programming and other software services and data processing and information providing services. These three sectors accounted for 79.2% of sales in the information and communications business as a whole.

    [Reference] The sales from the information and communications business of the companies which answered the survey for two consecutive years amounted to 43,069.5 billion yen (a 3.2% increase from the previous fiscal year).

    *Note 1: “Information and communications business” refers to: the telecommunications business; broadcasting business; broadcast program production business; internet based service business; information service business; and video picture, sound information, character information production and distribution business.

  2. 4,568 companies were classified as information and communications companies (companies whose sales in the information and communications business accounts for the largest portion of their revenue) and their sales for FY 2014 totaled 47,613.6 billion yen (of which 43,145.8 billion yen comes from the information and communications business).

    Sales per company were 10.42 billion yen (a 9.7% increase from the previous fiscal year), with the highest figure indicated by telecommunications companies, followed by newspaper companies and software development companies.

(2) Telecommunications and broadcasting business

991 companies were engaged in the telecommunications and broadcasting business and their sales for FY 2014 totaled 17,189.9 billion yen. When classified by business, the sales figure was 13,658.3 billion yen for the telecommunications business, 2,386.7 billion yen for the private sector broadcasting business, and 470.1 billion yen for the cable television broadcasting business.

[Reference] The companies which answered the survey for two consecutive years recorded sales of 16,651.0 billion yen (a 1.8% increase from the previous fiscal year).

(3) Broadcast program production business

394 companies were engaged in the broadcast program production business and their sales for FY 2014 totaled 417.4 billion yen.

Sales per company were 1.06 billion yen (a 19.2% increase from the previous fiscal year).

[Reference] The companies which answered the survey for two consecutive years recorded sales of 282.1 billion yen (a 7.0% decrease from the previous fiscal year).

(4) Internet based service business

532 companies were engaged in the Internet based service business and their sales for FY 2014 totaled 1,865.9 billion yen (a 3.8% increase from the previous fiscal year). When classified by service (*2), sales in the web content delivery business showed the highest figure.

Sales per company equaled 3.51 billion yen (a 16.3% increase from the previous fiscal year), marking an increase for two consecutive years.

[Reference] The companies which answered the survey for two consecutive years recorded sales of 1,709.1 billion yen (an 8.4% increase from the previous fiscal year).

*Note 2: Major sectors in this field are: the web content delivery business, the shopping website management business, and SNS and other network management businesses.

(5) Information service business

3,410 companies were engaged in the information service business and their sales for FY 2014 were 14,830.8 billion yen (a 3.1% increase from the previous fiscal year), marking an increase for five consecutive years. When classified by sector (*3), the number of customized software development companies marked the highest figure.

Sales per company equaled 4.35 billion yen (a 3.8% increase from the previous fiscal year), marking an increase for five consecutive years.

[Reference] The companies which answered the survey for two consecutive years recorded sales of 13,667.5 billion yen (a 2.7% increase from the previous fiscal year).

*Note 3: Major sectors in this field are: customized software development companies, data processing service companies, and game software development companies.

(6) Video picture, sound information, character information production and distribution business

723 companies were engaged in the video picture, sound information and character information production and distribution business and their sales for FY 2014 were 2,914.3 billion yen (a 1.8% increase from the previous fiscal year). When classified by sector (*4), the sales of newspaper companies marked the highest figure.

Sales per company were 4.03 billion yen (a 3.0% decrease from the previous fiscal year).

[Reference] The companies which answered the survey for two consecutive years recorded sales of 2,526.9 billion yen (a 5.3% decrease from the previous fiscal year).
