Joint Press Release with the Consumer Affairs Agency Recall of Batteries (Lithium Polymer) Sold by Ambientec Corporation (Recall of the Products and Refund)

A serious product accident occurred involving a battery (lithium polymer) made by Powertraveller Ltd., which is based in the United Kingdom, imported by AOI Japan Co., Ltd., and sold by Ambientec Corporation, causing the product to ignite and to burn its surroundings.

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) received a report of the incident and announced it as a serious product accident on November 13, 2015, in accordance with Article 35 (1) of the Consumer Product Safety Act, which relates to accidents of unclear origin in products.

On November 20, 2015, Ambientec Corporation announced on a website for its products operated by the company that it will recall the products in question and provide refunds.

METI would like to alert consumers who have purchased the product in question so that they may make use of the recall and refund services offered by the seller.

1. Nature of the accident and recurrence-prevention measures

1) Nature of the accident

A serious product accident involving a battery (lithium polymer) made by Powertraveller Ltd., which is based in the UK, imported by AOI Japan Co., Ltd., and sold by Ambientec Corporation occurred, causing the product to ignite and to burn its surroundings. The accident was reported to METI in accordance with Article 35 (1) of the Consumer Product Safety Act (Control No. A201500487).

The cause of the accident is under investigation.

In addition, two accidents were reported to the National Institute of Technology and Evaluation (NITE) as product accidents that do not fall under Article 35 (1) of the Consumer Product Safety Act.

2) Recurrence-prevention measures

To prevent further accidents, on November 20, 2015, the company announced on the website for its products that it will recall the products in question and provide refunds, as well as putting posters up in retail outlets and sending notices to purchasers of the products in question.
