METI Formulates the Cybersecurity Management Guidelines

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) formulated the Cybersecurity Management Guidelines with the Information-technology Promotion Agency, Japan (IPA). METI expects that measures for cybersecurity will be promoted under the leadership of corporate managers based on the Guidelines.

1. Background for formulation of the Guidelines

Cyberattacks targeting information including the personal information of customers and important technical information owned by companies are on the increase, and the tricks used in such attacks are becoming more sophisticated, while IT utilization is becoming essential for improving the profitability of companies at various business sites.

In response to this, it has become necessary for managers to determine the degree of investment in IT and security as a company strategy.

2. Outline of the Cybersecurity Management Guidelines

METI formulated the Cybersecurity Management Guidelines jointly with the IPA for large companies and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) (except small enterprises) that provide systems and services related to IT and for managers of companies for which it is essential to utilize IT as a management strategy, in order to promote measures for cybersecurity under the leadership of corporate managers.

It summarizes three principles that managers need to recognize and ten important items on which direction should be provided to persons in charge (CISOs, etc.) who take responsibility when managers conduct measures for information security, in order to protect companies from cyberattacks.
