Joint Press Release with the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications METI and the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) to Hold Meetings of the IoT Security Working Group

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the MIC are to hold meetings of the IoT Acceleration Consortium and the IoT Security Working Group in order to discuss security efforts to be made regarding designing and manufacturing IoT devices and connection to communication networks in consideration of security risks and other challenges which develop due to the advancement of the IoT into society.

1. Background

With the advancement of the IoT into society in recent years, an increasing number of devices are being connected to communication networks when utilized. It is imperative to ensure security in designing, manufacturing, managing, and operating IoT devices and in connecting these devices to networks so that safety of citizens can be ensured, allowing innovative business models for utilizing the IoT to be created free of these concerns.
The Cyber Security Strategy, approved by the Cabinet on September 4, 2015, stipulates that the progress of new businesses should be promoted while ensuring the security of IoT systems, and that the development of security guidelines and security technologies should be promoted.

2. Efforts to be made by the Working Group

The Working Group is to discuss security guidelines necessary for the design, manufacture, configuration, and management of IoT devices (Agenda 1) and security guidelines regarding IoT devices being connected to communication networks (Agenda 2), focusing on the unique characteristics of IoT systems.

3. Future schedule

After holding meetings of the Working Group, METI is to set up individual sub-working groups to deal with specific agendas. The sub-working groups are to hold discussions and compile guidelines at the following meeting of the working group, aiming for the spring of 2016.
