METI Announces the Twenty-five Enterprises Selected for the 2016 Health & Productivity Stock Selection!

Since FY 2014, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE) have been conducting the Health & Productivity Stock Selection, a program that recognizes value in terms of enterprise health and productivity management, and introducing it as an attractive investment option for investors who prioritize the improvement of corporate value from a long-term perspective. This program is part of the initiatives incorporated under the Japan Revitalization Strategy, and through it, METI and the TSE aim to encourage enterprises to further pursue efforts for health and productivity management.
The 2016 Selection is the second such selection, and today, January 21, 2016, METI hereby announces the 25 enterprises named as 2016 Health & Productivity Stock Selection.

1. Outline of the brands

Health and productivity management is a practice in which enterprises focus on and strategically carry out efforts with regard to their employees’ health from a management perspective. The Health & Productivity Stock Selection is conducted with the expectation that the program will become an incentive for more enterprises to undertake health and productivity management practices in order to vitalize business organizations, including enhancing the vitality and productivity of employees, leading to increased mid- to long-term performance and corporate value as well as improved investor understanding and evaluation.

Under this program, METI and the TSE select and publicize, by industry, outstanding enterprises from among all enterprises listed on the TSE (one enterprise per industry) that are making excellent efforts for health and productivity management. METI and the TSE selected 25 enterprises for the 2016 Selection, which is the second such selection.

METI previously conducted the FY 2015 Survey on Health and Productivity Management* and assessed the responses collected through this Survey from the perspective of five frameworks: [i] the positioning of health and productivity management in management philosophy and policies, [ii] organized frameworks established for tackling health and productivity management, [iii] specific systems established for ensuring health-conscious management as well as measures introduced for implementing them, [iv] measures established for assessing and improving health and productivity management, and [v] adherence to laws and regulations and risk management. In light of such assessments, the 25 outstanding enterprises were selected, while financial performance evaluations were also taken into consideration.

*Note: METI conducted the FY 2015 Survey on Health and Productivity Management (FY2015 Research Project for Assessing the Health and Productivity of Enterprises), targeting all listed enterprises in Japan (3,605 enterprises as of September 1, 2015).
