Joint Press Release with the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and TechnologyApproval of the Implementation Plan Prepared by iPS Academia Japan, Inc. Based on the Act to Facilitate Technology Transfer from Universities to the Private Sector

On January 22, 2016, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) approved the implementation plan that iPS Academia Japan, Inc. filed as a technology licensing organization (TLO) intending to implement Specified University Technology Transfer Operations, pursuant to the provisions of the Act to Facilitate Technology Transfer from Universities to the Private Sector (Act No. 52 of 1998).

1. Outline of Specified University Technology Transfer Operations

Specified University Technology Transfer Operations are operations for transferring outcomes from research on technology conducted in universities to the private sector by making use of such outcomes through the patent system and the like, in order to promote more effective utilization of such outcomes in society as well as operations that contribute to the advancement of research conducted in universities by returning profits such as funds obtained through such utilization to universities.

Business operators whose implementation plans have been approved (hereinafter referred to as “Accredited TLOs”) can receive support such as the reduction of or exemption from the payment of patent fees and the application of special provisions of the Small and Medium Business Investment & Consultation Companies Act.

2. Approval given this time

As approval was given this time, the number of Accredited TLOs based on the said Act increased and is currently 37 (as of January 22, 2016).

MEXT and METI will endeavor to provide support such as necessary advice for Accredited TLOs, in order to promote and expand the smooth implementation of Specified University Technology Transfer Operations.
