Joint Press Release with the Consumer Affairs AgencyRecall of Battery Packs Installed in Laptop Computers Manufactured by Panasonic Corporation (Product Replacement)

A serious product accident occurred involving a battery pack for a laptop computer manufactured by Panasonic Corporation, causing the product to ignite and to burn its surroundings.

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) received a report of a serious product incident and announced it as an accident in which the product was suspected to be the cause on December 15, 2015, in accordance with Article 35 (1) of the Consumer Product Safety Act.

To prevent further accidents, on January 28, 2016, Panasonic Corporation issued a request on its website that the battery packs in question be removed from any laptop computers and announced that it will replace these battery packs free of charge.

METI would like to alert consumers who have purchased these products so that they may make use of the replacement service offered by the company in order to prevent any further accidents.

1. Nature of the accident and recurrence-prevention measures

(1) Nature of the accident

A serious product accident occurred involving a battery pack for a laptop computer manufactured by Panasonic Corporation, causing the product to ignite and to burn its surroundings. The accident was reported to METI in accordance with Article 35 (1) of the Consumer Products Safety Act (Control No. A201500564, which was announced as an accident “involving a laptop computer”).

The cause of the accident is under investigation, but it is thought that a manufacturing defect in the battery pack caused the battery cell to overheat, igniting the product.

No injuries occurred as a result of the accident.

2) Recurrence-prevention measures

The company announced on its website on January 28, 2016 and in newspapers on January 29, 2016 that it will replace the battery packs in question free of charge in order to prevent further accidents.

Checking the laptop computer model

To check the model of your laptop computer, find the model name on the laptop computer itself.

Removal of the battery pack

Turn off your laptop computer and remove the battery pack from it.

Checking the model number and manufacturing lot number of a battery pack

The name plates on the battery pack used in your laptop computer itself displays the model number and manufacturing lot number of the battery pack.

3. Actions by the company

The company will provide free replacement and recall services, for anyone who has purchased any of the battery packs in question.

5. Alert to consumers

Anyone who has purchased any of the above products should remove the battery pack from the laptop computer and contact the company using the information listed below.
