Agency for Natural Resources and EnergyMETI Reviews and Revises the Electricity Supply-Demand Outlook for the Winter of FY 2015

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has conducted necessary review and revision of the electricity supply-demand outlook for the winter of FY 2015 in light of the start of constant rated thermal power output operations at the Kansai Electric Power Co., Inc.’s Takahama Nuclear Power Station Unit 3 following the restart of the unit.

1. Background

Following the startup of Takahama Nuclear Power Station Unit 3 on January 29, 2016, the Kansai Electric Power Co., Inc. started constant rated thermal power output operations on February 4, 2016. As the capacity of the Kansai Electric Power Co., Inc. to supply electricity had increased due to the restart of such operations, the electricity supply-demand outlook for the winter of FY 2015 was reviewed and revised.

2. Key points of the revision

METI has revised the electricity supply-demand outlook for the winter of FY 2015 as described in the attachment (see Japanese language press release).

3. Electricity supply-demand outlook for the winter of FY 2015

According to the estimate of electricity supply and demand for the winter of FY 2015 compiled in October 2015, the reserve margin in the service area of the Kansai Electric Power Co., Inc. for February 2016 was expected to be 3.3%, assuming that electricity conservation would be firmly established. However, as the company’s capacity to supply electricity increased due to the restart of Takahama Nuclear Power Station, it is expected that a reserve margin of 6.9% will be secured. This capacity to supply power has been secured by taking measures such as operating thermal power stations at full capacity and deferring regular inspections of plants. Although the restart of this power station will strengthen our ability to respond to emergencies such as unexpected accidents and other incidents, we would like to ask you for your continued understanding and cooperation in electricity conservation and energy saving.
