On February 10, 2016, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) will launch the “Robots for Everyone Project,” which calls for new ideas for utilizing robots in the service field, including department stores, beauty salons, hotels, and restaurants. The project will be implemented on a co-creation platform called “Blabo!” and is to conduct matching between ideas gathering many votes and enterprises and other entities toward the realization of such ideas.

1. Background

The New Robot Strategy (approved by the Headquarters for Japan’s Economic Revitalization on February 10, 2015) states that increases in labor productivity and added value in the service industry shall be promoted by utilizing robots in the service field. In order to achieve this, METI is currently proceeding with the Demonstration Project for Introduction of Robots (FY 2014 supplementary budget), which provides financial assistance for demonstrations for the introduction of robots in areas where robots are currently underutilized, such as the service field.

2. Call for ideas from the viewpoints of people’s daily lives

Regarding the utilization of robots in the service field, it is important to consider it from the viewpoints of business operators who want to improve their efficiency in behind-the-scenes work, and it is also indispensable to consider it from the viewpoints of people who use everyday services. Thus, this time, the Robots for Everyone Project calls for a wide range of ideas for the utilization of robots in the service field from the viewpoint of people’s daily lives on the co-creation platform Blabo!

3. Overview of the Robots for Everyone Project

The Robots for Everyone Project presents three key words so as to encourage people to come up with new ideas. Participants post their own ideas on each key word and evaluate each other, which will result in the discovery of new ideas for utilizing robots that are liked by the most people.
