On MITOH Day,* to be held March 10 (Thu.), 2016, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) is to hold the MITOH Meeting, at which MITOH IT human resources and companies proactively utilizing IT are to deliver presentations, conduct other relevant activities, and develop interpersonal networks in Tokyo in cooperation with the Information-Technology Promotion Agency, Japan (IPA) and the Mitou Foundation, so that MITOH IT human resources can play more assertive roles in various fields, including industry. In 2016, as a new attempt, METI is to also hold a business matching event for MITOH IT human resources and other entities including venture enterprises.

* Mitoh (also spelled mitou or mito) is a Japanese word meaning, “undiscovered territory.” The word is used to refer to something or somebody that we’ve never seen before, particularly in terms of superiority.

1. Outline

IPA has worked on the MITOH Program (Exploratory IT Human Resources Project) for 16 years, since FY 2000, and fostered about 1,650 talented people (world-class IT professionals). MITOH IT human resources have made contributions to many fields and about 10% of them have started their own businesses or commercialized their own inventions.

With the increasing need for business model innovation in every field of industry brought about by the advent of IoT, METI held the first MITOH Meeting on MITOH Day, on March 10, 2015, to demonstrate the potential of innovation brought about by MITOH IT human resources to people in a broad range of fields. In 2016, METI is to hold the second Meeting, aiming to promote the utilization of MITOH IT human resources in industry and other relevant fields and to further expand fields where such human resources can play active roles, in addition to the previous Meeting’s objectives.

Specifically, companies working on cutting-edge projects regarding the IoT will talk about the roles that IT human resources with outstanding abilities such as MITOH IT human resources are expected to play in companies settings. Also, a group discussion and presentations by MITOH IT human resources who are actually playing key roles in industry are to be held. A business matching event for MITOH IT human resources and entities including companies is also to be held for the first time.
