METI Starts Public Calls for Demonstration Projects for Lifestyle improvement Using Personal Health and Medical Information

Based on the results of discussions at meetings of the Study Group for Lifestyle Improvement Using Personal Health and Medical Information Owned by Enterprises and Insurers, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) started public calls for demonstration projects for using personal health and medical information in cooperation with the Japan Promotion Council for Diabetes Prevention and Countermeasures and relevant ministries including the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW).

1. Background and purpose

Effective and efficient investment in health requires the provision of health services that correspond to personal health risks. The purpose of these public calls is to improve public health and create and develop healthcare industries through the establishment of a mechanism for promoting to improve the health of prospective patients with lifestyle-related diseases, by integrating and utilizing received information, medical examination data, and health information (information on one’s daily health condition including vital data, exercise data, and nutritional data).

In December 2015, under the Health Investment WG (Working Group) under the Council on Healthcare Industry of Next Generation, METI established the Study Group for Lifestyle Improvement Using Personal Health and Medical Information Owned by Enterprises and Insurers (chaired by Mr. Nagaaki Ohyama, Professor at the Imaging Science and Engineering Laboratory of the Tokyo Institute of Technology) and has since then held three meetings of the Study Group to discuss measures against issues in terms of technology, systems, mentalities, and business in utilizing health and medical information.

2. Outline of the demonstration projects

Based on the results of the discussions at the meetings of the Study Group, METI started public calls for demonstration projects for lifestyle improvement using personal health and medical information in cooperation with the Japan Promotion Council for Diabetes Prevention and Countermeasures and relevant ministries including the MHLW. In these projects, received information, medical examination data, and personal health information stored on wearable terminals and other such devices will be collected to construct infrastructure through which such information can be analyzed and used in an integrated manner, and ways in which personal lifestyle should be improved using such infrastructure will be verified.
