Agency for Natural Resources and Energy Work Teams Will Receive a Certificate of Gratitude for their Commitment to the Measures for Decommissioning and Contaminated Water Management in Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station

Japan will recognize work teams of main contractors and cooperating enterprises for their outstanding contribution in the safe and secure decommissioning efforts at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (hereinafter referred to as ‘Fukushima Daiichi NPS.”)

1. Purpose of presenting a certificate of gratitude

The decommissioning of Fukushima Daiichi NPS is a globally unprecedented challenge involving many difficulties, and is expected to take 30 to 40 years to complete. The effort has been undertaken by operators committed to the measures for decommissioning and contaminated water management at the NPS. To show respect to them and enhance public awareness of their outstanding achievements, Japan will recognize the work teams of the main contractors and cooperating enterprises for their brave confrontations against difficult challenges and outstanding achievements, and will present them with a certificate of gratitude under the names of the Prime Minister, METI Minister and METI State Minister (Director-General of the Local Nuclear Emergency Response Headquarters).

2. Recipients of a certificate of gratitude

Work teams that have been committed to the measures for decommissioning and contaminated water management at Fukushima Daiichi NPS in FY2015

3. Selection criteria

METI selected work teams of cooperating enterprises, which have engaged in very difficult civil engineering work in the process of completing the steps set in the Mid-and-Long-Term Roadmap, if they meet the criteria of being work teams of cooperating enterprises:

  1. having devised work and achieved excellent results far beyond the planned results;
  2. having contributed to the safety of operations in particular;
  3. having endeavored to foster human resources in particular; or
    having achieved outstanding contribution to advancing the measures for decommissioning and contaminated water management.

4. Selection method

METI selected work teams that will receive a certificate of gratitude, taking the following steps: [i] METI sorted titles of project according to the selection criteria in cooperation with Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO); [ii] the main contractors undertaking the sorted projects selected entities that have been involved in the projects and have achieved an outstanding contribution out of their own companies or cooperating enterprise according to the criteria, and organized the work teams; and [iii] an examination committee of experts examined the results and finalized which work teams will receive a certificate of gratitude.

5. Future schedule

The work teams will be recognized and receive a certificate of gratitude at the International Forum on the Decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station in April 2016.
