Joint Press Release with the Consumer Affairs AgencyRecall of Electric Heaters (Carbon Heaters) Imported by YUASA PRIMUS CO., LTD. (Inspection and Repair)

A serious product accident occurred involving an electric heater (a carbon heater) imported by YUASA PRIMUS CO., LTD., causing the product to ignite and to burn its surroundings.

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) received reports of a serious product incident and announced it as an accident in which the product was suspected to be the cause on March 4, 2016, in accordance with Article 35 (1) of the Consumer Product Safety Act.

On March 19, 2016, YUASA PRIMUS CO., LTD., published the information on its website and in newspapers, and announced that it would conduct inspections and repair the products in question, including the same model as the product above free of charge

METI would like to alert consumers who have purchased these products so that they may make use of the inspection and repair service offered by the importer.

1. Nature of the accident and recurrence-prevention measures

1) Nature of the accident

A serious product accident involving an electric heater (a carbon heater) imported by YUASA PRIMUS CO., LTD. occurred, causing the product to ignite and to burn its surroundings. The accident was reported to METI in accordance with Article 35 (1) of the Consumer Product Safety Act (Control No. A201500815).
The cause of the accident is under investigation, but it is presumed that a defective diode used to adjust the heating power in the product caused abnormal heat generation, resulting in ignition.
In addition, two accidents were reported to the National Institute of Technology and Evaluation (NITE) as product accidents that do not fall under Article 35 (1) of the Consumer Product Safety Act.

2) Recurrence-prevention measures

To prevent further accidents, on March 19, 2016, the company posted the information on its website and in newspapers and announced that it will conduct inspections and repair the products in question free of charge.
