Joint Press Release with the Consumer Affairs Agency Recall of Electric Heaters (Carbon Heaters) Imported by Sugiyama Spinning and Weaving Co., Ltd. (Product Inspection and Repair)

A product accident occurred in an electric heater (carbon heater) imported by Sugiyama Spinning and Weaving Co., Ltd., causing the product and its surroundings to ignite.

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) was informed of this accident as a serious product accident and announced the accident on February 12, 2016, in accordance with Article 35 (1) of the Consumer Product Safety Act, which relates to an accident of unclear origin in a product other than a gas or oil appliance.

To prevent further accidents, Sugiyama Spinning and Weaving, while determining responses to this accident, issued a press release on March 16, 2016, on its website to ask consumers to stop using the products and it further announced on April 14, 2016, on its website that it would provide inspection and repair services for the products subject to the recall free of charge.

METI would like to encourage consumers who have purchased the products subject to the recall to receive free inspection or repair from the company in order to prevent any further accidents.

1. Nature of the accident and recurrence-prevention measures

  1. Nature of the accident
    A product accident occurred in an electric heater (carbon heater) imported by Sugiyama Spinning and Weaving Co., Ltd., causing the product and its surroundings to ignite. One serious accident report subject to Article 35 (1) of the Act has been submitted (Control No.: A201500743).
    The cause of the accident is under investigation, but it is thought to be that a diode for switching heating power of the product was defective and anomalously overheated, causing the product to ignite.
    In addition, two other product accidents were reported to the National Institute of Technology and Evolution (NITE), which are not covered by Article 35 (1) of the Act.
  2. Recurrence-prevention measures
    To prevent further accidents, the company provided related information on its website on April 14, 2016, to provide inspection or repair of the products subject to the recall free of charge.
