Japan-Argentina Joint Economic Forum Held

On May 12, 2016, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) held a Japan-Argentina Joint Economic Forum, taking opportunity of the visit of H.E. Ms. Gabriela Michetti, Vice President of Argentine Republic, to Japan. Following the forum, Vice President Michetti and METI Minister Hayashi exchanged a Memorandum of Cooperation for establishing a Japan-Argentina Joint Committee on Promoting Trade and Investment.

1. Japan-Argentina Joint Economic Forum

On May12, 2016, with Vice President Michetti attending, a Japan-Argentina Joint Economic Forum was held in Tokyo, co-chaired by Mr. Takayuki Ueda, Vice-Minister for International Affairs of Japan, and H.E. Mr. Miguel Braun, Secretary of Commerce of Argentina. The forum brought together H.E. Mr. Pedro Lacoste, Secretary of Treasury and Finance, H.E. Mr. Daniel Meilan, Secretary of Mining, H.E. Mr. Procacchini, Executive President, Argentina Investment & Trade Promotion Agency, and H.E. Mr. Alan Beraud, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Argentina to Japan, from the Argentinian side, and Mr. Ken Kobayashi, Chairman, Japan-Argentina Business Cooperation Committee, Mr. Yasushi Akahoshi, Executive Vice President, Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), and H.E. Mr. Noriteru Fukushima, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Argentina, from the Japanese side, including other senior government officials from both countries, stakeholders from many related economic communities, and people from related organizations. At the forum, both sides discussed issues on establishing cooperative relationships toward the enhanced bilateral economic relationship in the future.

Both officials from the Japanese government and representatives of Japan’s private sectors showed strong interest in Argentina’s rapid economic reform in recent years. In particular, participants from Japanese companies requested Argentina to undertake efforts for establishing legal frameworks, including future bilateral economic partnership agreements and bilateral investment treaty.

Meanwhile, Argentina explained to Japan about its foreign economic policies under the new Macri administration, and also showed strong interest in Japanese companies’ economic exchange with and investment promotion in Argentinian markets.

2. Memorandum of Cooperation concerning the establishment of a Japan-Argentina Joint Committee on Promoting Trade and Investment

Following the forum, Vice President Michetti and METI Minister Hayashi exchanged a Memorandum of cooperation for establishing a Japan-Argentina Joint Committee on Promoting trade and investment under the names of the METI Minister and the Minister of Production of Argentina, and they decided to hold the first meeting in Argentina by the end of 2016.
