CRAFTWOMEN SYMPOSIUM logo

On Thursday, May 19, 2016, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), Google Japan, and the Association for the Promotion of Traditional Craft Industries jointly held a Craftswomen Symposium in Tokyo.

1. Outline

Taking the opportunity of the G7 Summit Meeting in Japan, METI, JETRO, Google Japan and the Association for the Promotion of Traditional Craft Industries invited craftswomen from G7 member countries and held a Craftswomen Symposium.

Background

Women’s social advancement has been seen in the traditional crafts industry, a society requiring craftspeople to deal with heavy work, as seen in the fact that the number of women among total traditional craftspeople has been growing in recent years.

In addition, traditional crafts originating from regional climates and cultures in Japan have been increasingly attracting people inside and outside Japan.

Taking the opportunity of the G7 Summit Meeting in Japan, METI, endeavoring to encourage the industry of traditional Japanese crafts, decided to bring people from governmental organizations and craftswomen from G7 member countries together at a symposium and discuss efforts for creating crafts and the potential of collaborative projects among craftspeople from different countries. METI believes that such discussion would be very beneficial for increasing the momentum of women’s social advancement in Japan as well as other countries, and for promoting the vitalization of the traditional crafts industry.

  • At the symposium, participants confirmed the following three points:
    1. Crafts provide one of the (occupational) opportunities to encourage women’s social advancement.
    2. Women’s sensibilities are a source for creating new lifestyles.
    3. Online networks are important tools for supporting women’s social advancement.
