Joint Press Release with the Consumer Affairs Agency Recall of Aquarium Thermostat Heaters Sold by Gex. Co., Ltd. (Free Product Inspection and Product Replacement)

Product accidents occurred in aquarium thermostat heaters imported by Gex International Co., Ltd., and sold by Gex Co., Ltd., causing the products and their surroundings to ignite.

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) was informed of these accidents as serious product accidents and announced them on April 28, 2016, in accordance with Article 35 (1) of the Consumer Product Safety Act, which relates to an accident of unclear origin in a product other than a gas or oil appliance.

To prevent further accidents, on June 2, 2016, Gex Co., Ltd. will start inspection and replacement of the products in question free of charge, including the same product models.

METI would like to encourage consumers who have purchased the products subject to the recall to subject their product to the free inspection or receive a replacement from the company in order to prevent any further accidents.

1. Nature of the accident and recurrence-prevention measures

  1. Nature of the accident
    • Product accidents occurred in aquarium thermostat heaters imported by Gex International Co., Ltd., and sold by Gex Co., Ltd., causing the products and their surroundings to ignite. The cause of the accidents is under investigation.
    • Three serious-accident reports subject to Article 35 (1) of the Act have been submitted (Control Nos.: A201500084, A201600012, A201600043).
    • In addition, three other product accidents were reported to the National Institute of Technology and Evaluation (NITE), which are not covered by Article 35 (1) of the Act. No injuries occurred as a result of the accidents.
  2. Recurrence-prevention measures
    • To prevent further accidents, on June 2, 2016, Gex Co., Ltd. will publish related information on its website to ensure inspection and replacement services for the products subject to the recall are available to customers free of charge.
