METI to Call for Applicants for New Diversity Management Selection 100 in FY 2016 New program titled "Meet UP!" to start this fiscal year as an effort towards disseminating diversity management best practices

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has been conducting initiatives with the purposes of broadly publicizing the leading efforts of enterprises that have turned their diversity management (1*) promotion efforts into concrete business successes and increasing the number of enterprises which promote diversity management. As part of the initiatives, METI has been recognizing the diversity management efforts of outstanding enterprises through the METI Minister Award program of the New Diversity Management Selection 100. On July 15, 2016, METI will initiate the call for applicants for the FY2016 New Diversity Management Selection 100, which will be held for the fifth time since its inauguration.

In addition, METI will launch a new program this fiscal year titled “Meet Up!” in which it will hold a series of seminars across Japan and introduce practical methods of implementing diversity management practices, successful achievements thereof and other advice. Through such seminars, METI will endeavor to further advance the diversity management project.

1. Outline of New Diversity Management Selection 100

To strengthen Japanese enterprises’ competitiveness in the face of economic globalization and an aging society with fewer children, it is necessary to promote diversity management, which provides an increasingly diverse array of human resources, including women, foreign people, the elderly, and people with mental or physical challenges, with opportunities to exercise their potential and to take part in the value creation process.

From this viewpoint, the METI Minister Award program of the New Diversity Management Selection 100 aims to expand the base of diversity management promotion through recognizing and publicizing proactive efforts to implement diversity management by enterprises of various sizes in a broad spectrum of industries as those having management capabilities that contribute to Japan’s economic growth. The efforts of 174 enterprises have been recognized to this point and broadly publicized through the Internet and the distribution of booklets. This publication is expected to contribute to raising the external acclaim of such enterprises, enabling them to acquire excellent human resources, and other advantages.

Note 1*: Diversity management is a management strategy under which enterprises create innovation and generate value by utilizing a variety of human resources and providing them with opportunities to exercise their maximum potential.

3. New program titled “Meet UP!” as an effort for disseminating diversity management practices (Appendix 3)

The diversity management project has been conducted for five consecutive years, since FY 2012. Taking the opportunity of this anniversary, METI decided to launch a new program titled “Meet UP!” in which it will hold a series of seminars across Japan and introduce practical methods of implementing diversity management, the direct successes that result from diversity management and helpful advice. Through this program, METI aims to cultivate enterprises as future candidates for New Diversity Management Selection 100.

By introducing the case examples and achievements of successful enterprises that have been selected and recognized for their diversity management practices as winners of New Diversity Management Selection 100 at such seminars, METI will convey new value creation and innovation, which are the underlying purposes and eventual results of diversity management, to as many top managers and employees of enterprises as possible, and thereby aim to further disseminate diversity management practices. Through these seminars, METI aims to encourage diversity management in regional-based enterprises, by providing opportunities for participants to gain a fundamental understanding of diversity management and share real example of diversity management successes and challenges that enterprises are facing at the regional level.

Note: The term “Meet UP!” refers to a session at which human resources who have a variety of backgrounds but share the same purpose meet temporarily, exchange information in an intensive manner, and communicate the experience, including activities and inspiration from the session, back to their own organizations.
