The IoT Lab Selection and Local IoT Acceleration Labs Were Held and Winners Were Selected and Recognized

On Sunday, July 31, 2016, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the IoT Acceleration Lab held an IoT Lab Selection event, in which outstanding IoT-based projects are selected and recognized, and the winners of the Grand Prix, Semi Grand Prix, and Examiners’ Special Award were selected and recognized. With the opportunity provided by the event, a commendation ceremony was also held to approve 29 regions and offer a certificate to the regions recognized as the Local IoT Acceleration Labs.

Outline

Industries and society as a whole are seeing significant changes around the globe due to technological innovations occurring in IoT, big data, and AI. In response to this situation, it is necessary for Japan and other countries to create new IoT business models, uncover and develop IoT platform creators, and use them as a driving force for new growth.

The IoT Acceleration Lab was established to select and cultivate advanced IoT projects, provide those projects with comprehensive financial and regulatory support and ensure collaboration with enterprises and develop the environments in which the results of the projects can be implemented on a large scale through additional regulatory reforms or the creation of new systems. As part of the efforts, the IoT Acceleration Lab held events on Sunday, July 31, 2016, and selected and recognized winners as follows.

1) Second IoT Lab Selection which selects the most advanced projects

Based on the results of the broad call for new IoT projects, on Sunday, July 31, 2016, the IoT Acceleration Lab held the Second IoT Lab Selection. At the event which involved the 13 projects which remained after the first and second examinations, finalists made presentations before the public, thereby completing the final examination, and the winners were selected. The IoT Acceleration Lab recognized the winners of the Grand Prix, Semi Grand Prix, and Examiners’ Special Award as follows.

  • Grand Prix
    • Winner : UniFa Corporation
    • Title of project : Supporting the digitalization of services for monitoring the premises of nursery schools
  • Semi Grand Prix
    • Winner : Phoenix Solution Co., Ltd.
    • Title of project : World’s-first RFID tag that is readable even through the metal to which it is attached
  • Semi Grand Prix
    • Winner : Zenrin Co., Ltd.
    • Title of project : Demonstration project concerning information on three-dimensional aerial maps toward the realization of safe drone flight over city areas
  • Examiners’ Special Award
    • Winner : exMedio Inc.
    • Title of project : Technology for recognizing ophthalmic disorders using images and data from medical interviews

In collaboration with government-related organizations, financial institutes, venture capital firms and other support organizations, the IoT Acceleration Lab will provide the winners of the four projects and the finalists of the 13 projects with financial and mentoring support and support for regulatory reforms and standardization.

2) First selection of applicants for the Local IoT Acceleration Labs

METI and the IoT Acceleration Lab called for new regional-based projects from eligible entities, aiming to select such entities that can create IoT projects in rural areas as Local IoT Acceleration Labs and to support the establishment of IoT business startups through such projects.

At the event on Sunday, July 31, 2016, METI and the IoT Acceleration Lab selected and recognized 29 regions as the areas sorted by the first selection under the Local IoT Acceleration Labs project.

 

The 29 selected regions are as follows:
