Joint Press Release with the Consumer Affairs Agency Recall of Dehumidifiers Imported by IRIS OHYAMA INC. (Product Inspection and Repair)

Product accidents occurred in dehumidifiers imported by IRIS OHYAMA INC., igniting the products and their surroundings.

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) was informed of these accidents as a serious product accident and announced them on August 9, 2016, in accordance with Article 35 (1) of the Consumer Product Safety Act, which relates to an accident of unclear origin in a product other than a gas or oil appliance.

To prevent further accidents, on August 24, 2016, the company made an official announcement on its website that it was starting product inspections and repairs of the product models in question.

METI encourages customers who have purchased the products subject to the recall to utilize the inspection and repair service offered by the importer in order to prevent any further accidents.

1. Nature of the accident and recurrence-prevention measures

1) Nature of the accident

Product accidents occurred in dehumidifiers imported by IRIS OHYAMA INC., igniting the products and their surroundings.

Two serious accident reports subject to Article 35 (1) of the Act have been submitted (Control Nos.: A201500597, A201600240).

The cause of the accidents is under investigation, but it is thought that defective control switches, which were installed to stop the power supply if overturned, anomalously overheated, causing the products to emit smoke and ignite.

In addition, another product accident was reported to the National Institute of Technology and Evaluation (NITE), but it is not covered by Article 35 (1) of the Act.

No injuries occurred as a result of these accidents.

2) Recurrence-prevention measures

To prevent further accidents, on August 24, 2016, IRIS OHYAMA INC. will make an official announcement on its website, send direct mail to known consumers and post notices to customers in relevant shops and will start inspections and repairs of the products to be recalled free of charge.
