Operation of the Omotenashi Standard Certification System to Start Making service quality visible and improving service industry productivity

The service industry accounts for about 75% of Japan’s GDP. To vitalize the industry and its productivity, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) decided to establish a new standardization system titled “Omotenashi [hospitality] Standard Certification” and, on August 25, 2016, it will start accepting applications for the Omotenashi Standard Certification 2016 program.

1. The Omotenashi Standard Certification

Under the Omotenashi Standard Certification system, with the aim of vitalizing and improving productivity in the service industry and in order to make the quality of services more apparent to potential customers, METI will promote the efforts of service providers, thereby encouraging enterprises in the industry.

When they apply for the certification system and are registered, service providers will receive a certification sign and be allowed to display it in shops or offices as proof to customers of the quality of their services. It is hoped that this effort will help customers to identify the best service providers when looking for services, while also helping such registered service providers attract more customers.

2. The Omotenashi Standard Certification 2016

In the Omotenashi Standard Certification 2016 program, when applicants satisfy at least 15 requirements out of the 30 total registered requirements (the criteria for measuring the efforts of service providers in making the quality of their services visible to customers) METI will register the applicant service providers under the philosophy of the certification system.

After registering applicants, METI will issue a certificate and an “Omotenashi Standard Certification 2016” sign to the applicants. After having printed out the certificate and sign, the registered service providers are allowed to display these in shops or offices to attract the attention of customers to the quality of their services and efforts.

To apply for the program, visit the following website created exclusively for this purpose, which METI will make available on August 25, 2016.
