Winners of the Tenth Kids Design Awards

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) hereby announces that the winners of the Tenth Kids Design Awards have been selected. From among a record-high number of 503 applicants, Kids Design Association selected one winner for the Grand Award (Prime Minister’s Award), titled “Tokyo Yurikago Kindergarten + Satoyama Education” developed by a collaborative group consisting of Tokyo Uchino School, Tokyo Yurikago Kindergarten, Osamu Watanabe Architects, Rhythm Design Mov Co., Ltd., and Mitaka Design Office.

On Monday, August 29, 2016, Kids Design Association held a commendation ceremony to recognize the winners at Roppongi Hills and received a message from Prime Minister Abe. As a representative of METI, Mr. Toshinao Nakagawa, Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, attended the ceremony and delivered a celebration message concerning the 10th anniversary of the program as a milestone and his expectation regarding the further development of Kids Design.

1. Outline of the Kids Design Awards

The term “Kids Design” herein refers to a group of ideas and actions for utilizing the power of design to create a social environment that will contribute to the sound growth and development of children who will play roles in the next generation.

The Kids Design Awards is a program which recognizes outstanding products, space and services that realize and disseminate the philosophies of designs for kids, namely, designs that contribute to the safety and security of children, designs that cultivate children’s creativity and sensibility, and designs for comfortably raising children. Winners will be allowed to use a Kids Design mark labeled on their recognized works.

The program has been organized by the Kids Design Association, a non-profit organization (NPO) approved by the Cabinet Office (main office: Minato Ward, Tokyo; Chaired by Mr. Isami Wada, Chairman, Representative Director & CEO of Sekisui House Ltd.). The organization was established in May 2006, and currently consists of 108 enterprises and associations from a variety of sectors, including 68 enterprises, 23 municipalities, and other advisory entities.

2. Outline of the Tenth Kids Design Awards

Under the Tenth Kids Design Awards, Kids Design Association received a record-high number of 503 applicants for the program and selected 297 winners for their works. Among the winners, Kids Design Association further selected one winner for Prime Minister’s Award as the Grand Award, four winners for METI Minister’s Awards as the Excellence Awards, in addition to two for Minister of State for Measures for Declining Birthrate Awards, one for Minister of State for Consumer Affairs and Food Safety Award, one for Minister of State for Gender Equality Award, and one for Tokyo Metropolitan Governor’s Award, newly established this fiscal year.

Kids Design Association held a commendation ceremony and received a message from Prime Minister Abe. As a representative of METI, Parliamentary Vice-Minister Nakagawa attended the ceremony, delivered opening remarks and read the message on behalf of the prime minister.

METI will continue to support the program to disseminate and promote kids designs, aiming to cultivate children’s creativity and sensibility and assist parents with developing a society in which they have peace of mind in bearing children and are able to raise them.
