Winners of the Travel Mine Japan Project to be Announced A project for the purpose of uncovering potential tourist sites for overseas visitors through the utilization of regional resources still unknown to the world

Aiming to vitalize regional economies in Japan, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has been striving to encourage SMEs and other entities in regional areas to utilize external human resources and expand consumption by overseas visitors in those areas. As a part of this effort, METI will assist such SME initiatives with partial subsidies for expenses, mentoring services, and other measures through the Travel Mine Japan project, which called for applicants in June 2016.

On Friday, September 23, 2016, METI will announce the winners of the project on site during the JATA Tourism EXPO Japan event.

1. Outline of the project

Under the Project to Support SMEs in Developing Japan Brand Products and Services, commonly known as the “Travel Mine Japan” program, as an effort for which a portion of the FY2016 initial budget has been allocated, METI will assist SMEs and other entities in regional areas with subsidies of a portion of the expenses necessary for their initiatives to further cultivate the attractiveness of regional resources, branding such resources in the regions, drawing global attention to such brands through sales promotion overseas and other activities—aiming to alleviate some of the financial burden inherent to these initiatives. Through this effort, METI aims to encourage such SMEs in regional areas to utilize external human resources and expand consumption by overseas visitors in those areas.

Further, in order to increase the effectiveness of the achievements made, METI decided to commission the project to Revamp Corporation, a former successful applicant, as a support entity for the project. The company will dispatch advisors to SMEs and other entities in regional areas, support sales promotion efforts, support the construction of networks, etc.

2. Announcement of the winners

Having called for applicants for the project, METI received 73 applications from across Japan, and selected 9 winners as a result of objective assessments by external experts.
