Partnership with the World's Premier Educational Institution toward Development of Management Talent for the Service Industries Development of Tourism Services Management Talent

On September 4, 2016, Nakamura Gakuen University, which receives support from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) under the Services Management Talent Development Program through Business-Academia Collaboration, signed a comprehensive partnership agreement with the Culinary Institute of America, the world's premier educational institution specializing in providing education and technical training in relation to food. METI provides Nakamura Gakuen University with support for curriculum development aimed at developing human resources to be engaged in the management of tourist services including food services.

1. Services Management Talent Development Program through Business-Academia Collaboration

Within the framework of revitalization and productivity improvement measures for service industries, METI provides support grants for initiatives carried out through collaboration between universities and service providers with the objective of developing specialized and practical educational programs to teach the management skills required in service industries.

In FY2016, METI selected 16 universities nationwide as recipients of support grants. These universities are working on the development of educational programs in various fields in service industries.

2. Initiatives by Nakamura Gakuen University

In FY2015, Nakamura Gakuen University was selected as a recipient under this support program for the first time, and since then, it has been working on the development of educational programs toward "developing management talent in food industries and services through the integration of nutrition sciences and business, marketing and distribution sciences."

In FY2016, Nakamura Gakuen University made efforts to coordinate collaboration with the Culinary Institute of America (CIA), and on September 4, 2016, the two institutions signed a comprehensive partnership agreement. The CIA is the world's premier educational institution specializing in providing education and technical training in relation to food, and it is referred to as "the Harvard University of the food industry." This agreement will facilitate exchanges of academic and administrative staff and students as well as joint research projects between the institutions.
Nakamura Gakuen University plans to establish the "Food Management Department" in April 2017, making use of the educational programs and other outcomes achieved under this support program.

3. Future policy

Under this support program, METI will continue to help universities develop curricula for the development of management talent in the service industries, including management of tourism services in particular.
