Joint Press Release with the Consumer Affairs Agency Recall of Lighting Equipment with a Built-in Sensor Imported by Niigata Seiki Co., Ltd. and Sold by Cainz Corporation (Product Replacement)

A product accident occurred in lighting equipment with a built-in sensor imported by Niigata Seiki Co., Ltd. and sold by Cainz Corporation, causing the product and its surroundings to ignite.

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) was informed of the accident as a serious product accident and the Consumer Affairs Agency announced it on April 24, 2015, in accordance with Article 35 (1) of the Consumer Product Safety Act, which relates to accidents of unclear origin in a product other than a gas or oil appliance.

To prevent further accidents, Niigata Seiki will provide related information on its website on September 28, 2016, while Cainz Corporation, the retailer of the equipment, will also provide such information on its website and post notices to users at its shops from the same date to ask purchasers to stop using the recalled products, and they will provide a product replacement service free of charge.

METI would like to encourage consumers who have purchased the products subject to the recall to receive the replacement product from the importer or retailer in order to prevent any further accidents.

1. Nature of the accident and recurrence-prevention measures

1) Nature of the accident

A product accident occurred in lighting equipment with a built-in sensor imported by Niigata Seiki Co., Ltd. and sold by Cainz Corporation, causing the product and its surroundings to ignite.

One serious accident report subject to Article 35 (1) of the Act has been submitted (Control No.: A201500057).

In addition, two other product accidents not covered by Article 35 (1) of the Act were reported to the National Institute of Technology and Evaluation (NITE). No injuries occurred in these cases.

2) Recurrence-prevention measures

To prevent further accidents, Niigata Seiki will provide related information on its website on September 28, 2016, while Cainz Corporation, the seller of the equipment, will also provide such information on its website and post notices to users at shops from the same date to ask purchasers to stop using the recalled product, and they will provide a product replacement service free of charge.
