Events to be Held Including an Opening Reception for CEATEC JAPAN 2016, Japan’s Largest Exhibition in the Field of IoT, and International Collaboration and Japan-Germany Collaboration in the Field

On October 3, 2016, the following events will be held: an opening reception for CEATEC JAPAN 2016, Japan’s largest exhibition in the field of IoT; the conclusion of memorandums of cooperation in the field of IoT between the IoT Acceleration Consortium (ITAC) and the Industrial Internet Consortium (IIC), the United States, and between the ITAC and the OpenFog Consortium; and the conclusion of a memorandum of cooperation between Japan and Germany as partner countries in CeBIT 2017, an information and communication trade fair to be held in Germany in 2017.

Outline of the events

1) Signing ceremony concluding a memorandum of cooperation between Japan and Germany as partner countries in holding CeBIT 2017 in Germany

Details:
At the Japan-Germany Summit meeting in May 2016, Prime Minister Abe and Federal Chancellor Merkel agreed that Japan will become partner countries for CeBIT 2017 to be held in March 2017 in Hannover, Germany. In response, in August 2016, the Embassy of Japan in Germany and Deutsche Messe, a host organization of the event, concluded a memorandum of cooperation between the partner countries. On October 3, 2016, Deutsche Messe and JETRO concluded a memorandum of cooperation concerning the details of Japan’s participation in CeBIT 2017 as a partner country.

2) Signing ceremony concluding a memorandum of cooperation in the field of IoT between ITAC and IIC

Details:
A signing ceremony will be held for a memorandum of cooperation in the field of IoT between ITAC, a collaborative framework for the government, industry and academia sectors in the field of IoT in Japan, and IIC, the United States. According to the memorandum, both sides will advance demonstration projects in individual fields based on the common architectures and promote a variety of initiatives for standardization.

3) Signing ceremony for concluding a memorandum of cooperation in the field of IoT between ITAC and OpenFog Consortium

Details:
A signing ceremony for a memorandum of cooperation in the field of IoT will be held between ITAC, a collaborative framework for the government, industry and academia sectors in the field of IoT in Japan, and OpenFog Consortium, the United States. Both sides will advance demonstration projects focused on distributed computing and promote a variety of initiatives for standardization, forecasting the availability of IoT solutions particularly for the fields in which real-time operation or processing of large amounts of data are required.

Details:
Opening reception for CEATEC JAPAN 2016, Japan’s largest exhibition in the field of IoT, which will be held in Makuhari Messe from October 4 to 7, 2016. Taking this opportunity, it will be announced that Japan has concluded a memorandum of cooperation with Germany as a partner country for CeBIT 2017 and that ITAC has concluded memorandums of cooperation with IIC and the OpenFog Consortium of the United States respectively, in the field of IoT, both of which will have occurred immediately before the reception.

  1. CeBIT is an exhibition in the field of information, communication and digital equipment held in an international exhibition center every March in Hannover, Germany, attracting around 220,000 visitors. CeBIT 2017 will be held over five days from March 20, 2017.
  2. IoT Acceleration Consortium (ITAC)
    • ITAC was inaugurated in October 2015 in cooperation with METI and MIC, as a framework for the utilization of fourth industrial revolution products and services realized through the advancement of big data, artificial intelligence and other advanced technologies and intended to facilitate the best utilization of such achievements between the government, industry and academic sectors, ignoring the borders between companies and industries. The number of ITAC member companies is about 2,300 as of September 20, 2016. The consortium has been promoting efforts for developing and demonstrating IoT-related technologies and creating new business models through the operation of multiple working groups.
  3. Industrial Internet Consortium (IIC)
    • IIC was inaugurated in March 2014 by five initial member companies in the United States: AT&T, CISCO, GE, IBM and Intel. It advances the implementation of IoT-based industrial achievements within industrial markets.
  4. OpenFog Consortium
    • OpenFog Consortium was inaugurated in November 2015 by ARM, CISCO, Dell, Intel, Microsoft, Princeton University and other entities. It has been promoting efforts for developing open architecture and distributed (processing) computing, or fog computing technology.
  5. CEATEC JAPAN
    • CEATEC JAPAN is Japan’s largest exhibition in the field of IoT, held every year in early October in Tokyo (Makuhari Messe) and attracting around 130,000 visitors. CEATEC JAPAN 2016 will be held over four days beginning on October 4, 2016.
