WLTP* to be Introduced to evaluate the achievement made for Fuel Efficiency Standards of Passenger Car and Other Vehicle

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) have jointly compiled a new policy** for introducing the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP) on March 25, 2016. According to this policy, they revised the public notices related to the vehicle fuel efficiency regulations under the Act on the Rational Use of Energy and will introduce the WLTP to determine whether or not passenger cars and other vehicles satisfy fuel efficiency standards.

1. Outline of the revision

1) Fuel efficiency standards

The revised Act will allow related businesses to utilize the test procedures under the WLTP for evaluating the achievement made for Fuel Efficiency Standards of Passenger Car and Truck of goods and having a maximum mass not exceeding 3,500kg, instead of the existing test procedures under the JC08 mode.

2) Matters to be indicated

The revised Act will require related businesses to display the results of fuel efficiency calculated by the WLTP test procedure.
