Announcement of Winners of the FY 2016 Tenth METI Minister’s Awards for Best Contributors to Product Safety Honoring Companies Highly Committed to Product Safety

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) launched the Best Contributors to Product Safety Awards program in FY 2007 with the aim of encouraging private enterprises to make a greater commitment to improving product safety as well as to firmly establish the concept of the value of product safety in Japanese society.

METI hereby announces that it has selected 14 enterprises and organizations as winners of the FY 2016 Tenth Best Contributors to Product Safety Awards. The awards ceremony to recognize these winners will take place during the Product Safety Inspection Seminar, to be held in Tokyo on November 18 (Fri.), 2016.

1. Outline of the Awards

Best Contributors to Product Safety Awards

1) Eligible applicants for the awards

Manufacturers, importers, and retailers of daily consumer products

2) Examination procedures

An examination committee composed of academic experts, representatives of consumer associations, and other entities examines applicants’ commitment to product safety. In FY 2016, the committee selected applicants through the examination of written applications in the primary examination (July), presentations by screened applicants in the secondary examination (September), and on-site interviews by committee members (September and October). The committee finalized the winners at the final examination, which was held at a meeting of the committee in October.

3) Examination criteria

The committee evaluated the applicants’ systems for securing product safety based on four criteria:

  1. Commitment to manufacturing or selling safe products;
  2. Commitment to helping users handle products safely;
    1. Commitment to appropriately addressing problems in product safety that emerge after products are shipped (for the manufacturing and import sectors);
    2. Commitment to appropriately addressing problems in products such as accidents and recalls (for the retail sector); and
  3. Commitment to establishing a culture of product safety

Associations or enterprises that are involved in business related to daily consumer products

2) Examination procedures

The awards ceremony to announce and recognize these winners will take place during the 11th Product Safety Inspection Seminar, as part of Product Safety Inspection Month, which is a month-long effort, from November 1 through 30, 2016. At the ceremony, the winners of the METI Minister’s Awards will make presentations.
