Workshop under the G7-Alliance on Resource Efficiency to be Held toward the Promotion of International Resource Recycling

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) will hold a Workshop under the G7-Alliance on Resource Efficiency - International Resource Recycling - at Iino Hall & Conference Center (Uchisaiwaicho, Chiyoda Ward) on December 14 (Wed.), 2016, from 13:00.

If you wish to attend the workshop, please register in advance (free of charge).

1. Purpose and summary

Japan has been leading the rest of the world in committing to the 3R initiative for reducing environmental burden and promoting efficient use of resources. At the G7 Summit 2015 in Schloss Elmau, Germany, G7 leaders agreed to establish a G7-Alliance on Resource Efficiency as a platform for member countries to share best practices in the field to realize a society with high resource efficiency. Moreover, at the G7 Ise-Shima Summit Meeting in May 2016, G7 leaders confirmed their intention to protect the environment, including the weather, and also to promote innovation and economic growth through the efficient utilization of resources.

Due to the current, widespread nature of international resource recycling, including secondary resources and recycled parts, more consideration regarding the problems associated with international resource recycling is necessary. Even when a resource has no demand in one country and cannot help but being put into a landfill, the same resource may be in demand in another country as a recyclable resource. Despite the fact that the international system for resource recycling is far from perfect (e.g., lack of appropriate contamination controls in some areas or resources consumed due to transportation to other countries), both effective utilization of resources and the reduction of environmental burden are possible if the resource are transported from countries without appropriate recycling technologies or systems to those with such technologies for processing.

The workshop aims to help participants share the best practices for promoting such international resource recycling or share those of the governmental or private initiatives in other countries which aim to overcome challenges in international resource recycling. In addition, they will also aim to come to a common recognition concerning cooperation in promoting appropriate international resource recycling, aiming to improve resource efficiency at the global level.
