Joint Press Release with the Consumer Affairs Agency Recall of Electric Fans Imported by Panasonic Ecology Systems Co., Ltd. and Sold by Panasonic Corporation (Product Replacement and Installation)

Product accidents occurred in electric fans imported by Panasonic Ecology Systems Co., Ltd. (corporate number: 8180001075388) and sold by Panasonic Corporation (corporate number: 5120001158218), causing the products and their surroundings to ignite.

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) was informed of the accidents as serious product accidents and the Consumer Affairs Agency made the announcement on August 30, 2016, in accordance with Article 35 (1) of the Consumer Product Safety Act, which relates to accidents of unclear origin in a product other than a gas or oil appliance.

To prevent further accidents, Panasonic Corporation today made an official announcement on its website that it would start product replacement and installation services free of charge, including the same product models.

METI encourages consumers who have purchased products subject to the recall to receive product replacement and installation services from the company in order to prevent any further accidents.

1. Nature of the accident and recurrence-prevention measures

1) Nature of the accident

Product accidents occurred in electric fans imported by Panasonic Ecology Systems Co., Ltd. and sold by Panasonic Corporation, causing the products and their surroundings to ignite. Five serious-accident reports subject to Article 35 (1) of the Act have been submitted (Control Nos.: A201300110, A201400238, A201400356, A201600133, and A201600277).

The cause of the accidents with control numbers of A201400238, A201600133 and A201600277 is thought to be that a motor lead wire was pinched during motor assembly, between parts of the oscillating unit of the fans. This is thought to have cut of the core wire, caused contact failure and made the products overheat accidentally, along with the exacerbation of the broken wire while the fan maintained oscillation, causing a short-circuit of the motor lead wire between electrodes, which ignited.

Additionally, the cause of the accidents with control numbers of A201300110 and A201400356 is thought to be that a motor lead wire in the products was cut, causing the product to short-circuit and ignite, but details of the cause of these accidents were not confirmed. The decision was made to end the investigation and perform a recall.

No injuries occurred as a result of these accidents.
