Tabisuru Shintora Market to Open

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Association of Chiefs of Regional Governments for the Revitalization of Regional Economy Taking Advantage of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games (hereinafter referred to as the “Association”), chaired by Mr. Isato Kunisada, mayor of Sanjo City, Niigata Prefecture, will jointly start a new regional revitalization campaign called “Tabisuru Shintora Market,” opening on February 24 (Fri.), 2017.

1. Outline of the Association

With the opportunity provided by the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Association aims to encourage the broad collaboration of regional areas and promote a variety of efforts taking advantage of the unique characteristics of each region. Conveying the attractiveness and collective strengths of the regions to overseas countries will further ensure regional revitalization and achieve the goal of nation-wide revitalization of regional economies. The Association consists of 464 municipalities as members as of February 13, 2017.

2. Details of the Tabisuru Shintora Market campaign

The campaign will be carried out on Shintora Avenue, a street both physically and symbolically connecting the main stadium and an Olympic village for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games. Under the slogan “The Japan Connect,” an initiative under which the attractiveness of people, goods and things from across the nation are concentrated and conveyed to the public aiming at a contribution to regional revitalization, the campaign will provide experience-based events originating in a variety of regions, based on a new theme every three or so months.
