METI Announces the Twenty-Four Enterprises Selected for the 2017 Health & Productivity Stock Selection!
The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE) have been jointly conducting the Health & Productivity Stock Selection program since FY2014. This program, which is one of the initiatives set in the Japan Revitalization Strategy, aims to evaluate corporations in terms of their “health and productivity management” and to introduce the selected enterprises as an attractive investment option for investors who prioritize the improvement of corporate value from a long-term perspective. Through this effort, METI and the TSE aim to encourage enterprises to further pursue efforts for “health and productivity management.”
The 2017 Selection is the third such selection, and on February 21, 2017, METI announced that 24 enterprises were selected as the 2017 Health & Productivity Stock Selection Corporations.
1. Health & Productivity Stock Selection
Under the Health & Productivity Stock Selection program, METI and TSE have jointly selected, on a one-company-per-industry basis, outstanding TSE-listed enterprises engaging in health and productivity management programs in which enterprises focus on and strategically carry out efforts with regard to their employees’ health from a management perspective. Under the program, METI and TSE recognize such outstanding TSE-listed enterprises in terms of their health and productivity management and promote the selected enterprises as an attractive investment option for investors who prioritize the improvement of corporate value from a long-term perspective. Through this effort, METI and TES aim to raise public recognition of enterprises engaging in health and productivity management and to thereby further promote such management programs.
This program is one of the initiatives for “extending the healthy life-span of the people”, a goal set in the Japan Revitalization Strategy.
The 2017 Selection is the third such selection, and the 24 enterprises in 24 industries were selected for the 2017 Health & Productivity Stock Selection.
Prior to the selection, METI conducted the FY2016 Survey on Health and Productivity Management* and assessed the responses collected through this survey based on five criteria: [i] the positioning of health and productivity management in management philosophy and policies, [ii] organized frameworks established for tackling health and productivity management issues, [iii] specific systems established for ensuring health-conscious management as well as measures introduced for implementing them, [iv] measures established for assessing and improving health and productivity management, and [v] adherence to laws and regulations and risk management. The 24 outstanding enterprises were selected based on these criteria as well as financial performance evaluations which were taken into consideration.
*Note: METI conducted the FY2016 Survey on Health and Productivity Management (FY2016 Research Project for Assessing the Health and Productivity of Enterprises), targeting all listed enterprises in Japan (3,640 enterprises as of August 26, 2016).
Selection criteria
- Enterprises ranking in the top 20% of all the enterprises that answered the Survey on Health and Productivity Management in terms of scores derived from the overall rating system
- Enterprises whose ROE (return on equity) is at least 8%, or equal to the past three-year median value in their industry
Note: In addition, enterprises should not have committed any serious legal violations.
