The IoT Lab Selection and Local IoT Acceleration Labs Events Were Held and Winners Were Selected and Honored
On Monday, March 13, 2017, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the IoT Acceleration Lab held the IoT Lab Selection event and selected and honored the outstanding IoT-based winners of the Grand Prix, Semi Grand Prix, and Examiners’ Special Award. A commendation ceremony was also held to approve 24 regions and provide certificates to the regions recognized as the Local IoT Acceleration Labs.
The technological changes resulting from IoT, big data and AI are transforming industries and society on the whole around the globe. In response to this situation, it is necessary for Japan and other countries to create new IoT business models and uncover and develop IoT platform creators, using them as a driving force for new growth.
The IoT Acceleration Lab was established for the purpose of selecting and cultivating advanced IoT projects, providing those projects with extensive support in terms of collaboration with enterprises, finance and regulations, and developing environments in which the results of the projects can be implemented on a large scale through additional regulatory reforms or the creation of new systems. As part of the efforts, the IoT Acceleration Lab held joint events on Monday, March 13, 2017, and selected and honored winners as follows.
1) Third IoT Lab Selection for the most advanced projects
Based on the results of the broad call for new IoT projects, on Monday, March 13, 2017, the IoT Acceleration Lab held the Third IoT Lab Selection. At the event, which involved the eight projects that passed the first and second examinations, finalists completed the final examination which consisted of making public presentations, after which the winners were selected. The IoT Acceleration Lab selected the winners of the Grand Prix, Semi Grand Prix, and Examiners’ Special Award as follows.
- Winner: Coaido Inc.
- Title of project: Application for increasing the possibility of your loved ones surviving cardiac arrest
Semi Grand Prix
- Winner: Dr. Hiroki Kobayashi, Center for Spatial Information Science, University of Tokyo
- Title of project: Temporal-spatial information network using sensors attached to wild animals
Examiners’ Special Award
- Winner: Keychain Pte. Ltd.
- Title of project: Establishment of IoT-based authorization platform using blockchain technologies
In collaboration with government-related organizations, financial institutes, venture capital businesses and other support organizations, the IoT Acceleration Lab will provide the finalists of the 8 projects, including the winners of the three projects, with financial and mentoring support in addition to support for regulatory reforms and standardization.

2) Second selection of applicants for the Local IoT Acceleration Lab
METI and the IoT Acceleration Lab called for new local-based projects from eligible entities, aiming to select such entities that can create IoT projects in local areas as Local IoT Acceleration Labs and to support the establishment of IoT business startups through such projects. In July 2016, as the first selection, METI and the IoT Acceleration Lab selected 29 regions under the Local IoT Acceleration Labs project.
At the event on Monday, March 13, 2017, METI and the IoT Acceleration Lab recognized 24 additional regions as the areas sorted by the second selection under the Local IoT Acceleration Labs project.
