METI Parliamentary Vice-Minister Nakagawa Visited the Republic of Chile and the Republic of Panama

From March 13 (Mon.) to 18 (Sat.), 2017, Mr. Toshinao Nakagawa, Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, visited Viña del Mar, the Republic of Chile, to attend a High-level Dialogue on Integration Initiatives in the Asia-Pacific Region. Taking this opportunity, he also held bilateral meetings with officials from Mexico, New Zealand, Chile and other participating countries. On his return trip to Japan, he visited the Republic of Panama and exchanged opinions with an official concerning Japan’s quality infrastructures as a sales representative for Japan.

1. High-level Dialogue on Integration Initiatives in the Asia-Pacific Region

The dialogue brought together officials from 15 countries, namely, Japan, Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, the ROK, Singapore, the United States, and Viet Nam. Under the chairmanship of H.E. Mr. Heraldo Muñoz Valenzuela, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chile, participants exchanged views concerning approaches to free trade and investment as well as economic and trade integration in the Asia-Pacific region, a growth market. Mr. Takao Ochi, State Minister of Cabinet Office, and Mr. Kentaro Sonoura, State Minister for Foreign Affairs, also attended the dialogue as representatives of Japan, in addition to Parliamentary Vice-Minister Nakagawa.

 

2. Bilateral meetings

Parliamentary Vice-Minister Nakagawa and State Minister of Cabinet Office Ochi held bilateral meetings with the following officials and others who attended the dialogue and exchanged views concerning TPP, RCEP and other trade negotiations: H.E. Mr. Ildefonso Guajardo Villarreal, Secretary of Economy, Mexico; H.E. Mr. Todd McClay, Minister of Trade, New Zealand; Minister Munoz, Chile; H.E. Dr. Koh Poh Koon, Minister of State Ministry of National Development & Ministry of Trade and Industry, Singapore; H.E. Mr. Francois-Philippe Champagne, Minister of International Trade, Canada; H.E. Ms. María Claudia Lacouture, Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, Columbia; and H.E. Mr. Edgar Vasquez, Vice Minister of Foreign Trade, Peru.

3. Visiting Panama


Meeting with Vice Minister Navarro

On March 16, 2017, following the visit to Chile, Parliamentary Vice-Minister Nakagawa also visited the Republic of Panama and held a meeting with H.E. Ms. María Luisa Navarro, Vice Minister for Multilateral Affairs and Cooperation. At the meeting, both sides confirmed the importance of the dissemination of quality infrastructures, the importance of the Panama Canal for Japan’s energy security, as well as future Japan-Panama cooperation under the international framework.
