Summary of the 2016 Basic Survey on Small and Medium Enterprises (Preliminary Report)

The Small and Medium Enterprise Agency (SMEA) compiled the Preliminary Report on the 2016 Basic Survey on Small and Medium Enterprises (performance results are based on the FY2015 closing accounts) and hereby releases the results.

Key points of the report

  • Total sales were 485 trillion yen, down by 1.6% from the previous year, and total ordinary profits were 18.5730 trillion yen, down by 0.5% from the previous year.
  • Ordinary profit margins from sales for incorporated enterprises were 3.18%, up by 0.04 percentage points from the previous year.
  • The percentage of incorporated enterprises that have subsidiaries, affiliated companies, or business establishments overseas was 0.9%, remaining at the same percentage point as the previous year, i.e., a 0.0 percentage point change.
  • The percentage of incorporated enterprises that have conducted research and development for new products or new technology was 2.3%, down by 0.1 percentage points from the previous year.
  • The percentage of incorporated enterprises that possess patent, utility model, design, or trademark rights was 5.4%, up by 0.2 percentage points from the previous year.
